Some of the 13 people who formed that legendary theatrical performance refined themselves into the band Deaf School. The college Christmas event took the principle that ‘anyone can get up and do it’ instead of booking the usual rock band. There’s an argument that elements of punk rock originated in 1973 with the art rock performance crowd at Liverpool School of Art. “In the 70’s a lot of the shops still had 60’s swag, so I used to buy Beatles jeans and go to London and sell it on the King’s Road, and I met Don Letts and I’d buy my clothes from SEX before coming back to Liverpool.” Jayne set up a clothes stall – Aunt Twacky’s at O’Halligan’s Warehouse – which was a good way to meet other alternative and arty people in Liverpool at that time: So, I shaved my head and I guess I was the first punk in the city … Shaving my hair off was about getting rid of a lot of my femininity it gave me more of an equal playing field.” Photo by Keith Bleasdale I felt like I’d been abused by the mainstream and I wanted to create a new world. “I was really sweet and lovely, so it was a bad attitude in terms of I wasn’t interested in the mainstream. ![]() Of course, you don’t need to fret at all if you deal with 99.9999(…)%. In most practical cases, it’s not an issue. You can, of course, get an approximate answer by rounding it off. To display these as exact values, you must express them as fractions. With this in mind, how simple can this fraction go? The common factor of the two numbers is 5. Here’s how we can turn 37.5% into a decimal, fraction, and ratio: For instance, 37% will be 37/100 because the common factor between the two numbers is 1. Often, you can simplify many percentages by leaving them as is. Remember that your denominator is always 100, and not all numbers will share its factors. To convert to a ratio, change the slash into a colon. Then, divide the two numbers by their common factor, 5. For instance, to simplify 5%, start by expressing it as 5/100. Then you divide both the numerator and denominator by them. First, you must find the greatest common factor between the two numbers. Thus, 2% is 0.02 and 50% is 0.5.Ĭonverting a percentage to a fraction or ratio is more complex. When you already have the decimal value, move the decimal point two places to the left. Divide the fraction to get its decimal value, then multiply it by 100.įor our first example, let’s find the percentage value of 6/8: The easiest percentage conversion is through decimals. You have several ways of converting a fraction into a percentage. Likewise, you can express any fraction, decimal, or ratio as a percentage. Thus, you can convert them into ratios, decimals, or other fractions. A single percentage point, 1%, is equal to the fraction 1/100. All percentages are numbers divided by 100. Much like fractions, percentages represent parts of a whole. Besides convenience, this is especially true when it comes to expensive purchases and investments. Grasping basic percentages is a vital skill that can help you save time and money. They all mean something different in context, yet use the same expression. You can find them in banks and stores to video game inventories. Its usefulness in everyday arithmetic is evident wherever you look. Percentages convert to decimals, which are much easier to process. They also simplify the process of calculating based on a proportion. They illustrate proportion and completeness in a way that’s easy to understand. The percentage became one of the most popular expressions of fractions for a reason. In its most literal form, percentages mean “part per hundred.” This is the expression of a fraction or ratio where the denominator is 100. Even if your work does not involve a lot of computing or mathematical concepts, you’re bound to encounter it now and then. This tune will more than likely emerge as a highlight in their stadium tour to come with the typical clap, clap, stomp beat throughout. Seeing as this band has been to a lot of places in their short career, it’s obvious why they’d take part in writing a song about staying true to themselves and their past life before stardom. Verdict: 5/10 – This song is the “Little Things” of this album. Also includes some undulating cymbals in the background and various stringed instruments to set the mood. ![]() “Nothing can come between you and I,” they sing, and any fan can believe it. Guitar-led with more emotional ballad lyrics, “You & I” depicts a love story. Verdict: 8/10 – One of those songs that could easily be on repeat until you get tired of it. Nevertheless, this song’s really catchy, and with the added Harry letting out his inner rock star by shrieking into the mic towards the end, it’s hard not to love it. This song presents itself as the most risky for the clean cut band, pushing at the boundaries of “PG” with the lyrics “Same ol’ shh but a different day” and Louis singing the rebellious line, “tell me that I’m wrong but I do what I please.” The song shows the band’s producer’s originality once again with a chorus that sounds very much like “Pour Some Sugar On Me” by Def Leppard. Verdict: 5/10 – Confession: I am the iffy fan. The beats and guitar in this selection could be iffy in the opinions of some fans, though the band makes up for the new ‘80s rock sound with the lyrics “Diana, let me be the one to light a fire in those eyes,” in which the name “Diana” could cleverly substitute for any girl’s name. The shift from bubblegum pop to pop-rock sounds more in this song than the first two tracks. Verdict: 8/10 – Sweet and simple with lilting melodies that are pleasing to the ear. The sweeping harmonies are chilling, and you could easily find this song as a soundtrack to a Nicholas Sparks movie adaptation. The soft guitar strumming is Mumford and Son-esque, and the lyrics are heavy and full of emotion. Verdict: 8/10 – Reminiscent of their past hit singles, no one could deny this song’s potential.Įach member of One Direction took part in the lyrical and writing side of this song. This song starts off sounding suspiciously like The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” opening chords. ![]() Join me in a track-by-track review of “Midnight Memories”: They’ve given themselves the potential to appeal to older audiences and create a broader fanbase, which allows fans of the band to grow up with them. The haiku quoted above demonstrates why but there is also something ineffable, even ambiguous about his haiku, which explains the comparisons to modernism. His work has been aligned with modernism, and certainly Ezra Pound, the founder of imagism, considered his poetry to be ‘beautiful’. But his greatest claim to fame is that he was the first Japanese-born poet to publish poetry in English. He would later travel to England to lecture on Japanese poetry. He moved from Japan to the US when he was a teenager, settling in San Francisco, although he later returned to Japan. Yonejirō Noguchi (1875-1947) was an influential Japanese poet who composed a number of hokku or haiku. This is one of those twenty-four, with the suddenness of the final line – which transforms the poem from a lyric about nature into a love poem – showing the potential of the haiku for arresting our attention and showing us something in a new light. Lowell, too, was drawn to Japanese forms, and ‘Twenty-Four Hokku on a Modern Theme’ appeared first in Poetry magazine in June 1921. Indeed, one of Pound’s most famous poems, ‘ In a Station of the Metro’, suggests the brevity and language of the haiku without strictly being an example of one. ![]() And the imagists were much in love with the haiku. In this haiku, we can see how Shiki approached the haiku unsentimentally, bringing in the simple image of the dog barking to summon the desolation and quiet that hangs over a small village during wintertime.ħ. It is very easy to write an indifferent haiku, and very difficult to write one which can say something significant within its three brief lines. Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) was a reformer of the haiku: he felt that, at the end of the nineteenth century, the form had become stale and full of platitudes. Although strictly speaking it might be considered an example of Senryu instead of haiku (because its focus is solely human, rather than nature), it’s a notable development in the western adoption of the Japanese form. At the time, the form was sufficiently unfamiliar to his English readers for Dobell to consider it necessary to include a footnote explaining what a haiku was.ĭobell’s, then, is another very early example of a haiku written in English.
